What is masking, and why does it cause burnout in neurodivergent adults?

If you're a neurodivergent adult who has always managed to hold things together on the outside - kept the job, maintained the friendships, appeared composed - you may be very familiar with the exhaustion underneath.

That exhaustion has a name: masking. And for many adults with ADHD, autism, or both, it's one of the central reasons that burnout eventually becomes unavoidable.

What is masking?

Masking is when someone hides or compensates for their neurodivergent traits to appear more typical in social, academic, or professional settings. It's often a subconscious survival strategy - a way of avoiding judgment, fitting in, or meeting expectations, especially in environments where the true nature of someone's struggles might be misunderstood.

It might look like rehearsing conversations in advance, suppressing the urge to move during meetings, overworking to compensate for slower processing, or constantly monitoring yourself for anything that might seem "off." It can be so habitual that you barely notice you're doing it - until you get home and collapse.

Why does masking lead to burnout?

Long-term masking is one of the reasons so many people with ADHD experience burnout, anxiety, and late diagnosis. The effort of performing neurotypically, day after day, is simply not sustainable. A 2025 study found a significant association between ADHD symptoms and the severity of stress-induced exhaustion disorder, suggesting that ADHD could be a predisposing factor for severe burnout.

For many people, burnout is the moment the mask finally slips - and the point at which they begin to look for a different kind of support.

What comes next?

Understanding that exhaustion is a consequence of masking - not a personal failing - is often the first important shift. From there, it's about gradually reducing the load: identifying where the most energy is draining, building in recovery, and developing ways of functioning that don't require you to perform a version of yourself that doesn't exist.
